Highlights From The 2015 Global Petroleum Show

What’s the consensus on the 2015 Global Petroleum Show (GPS) that just happened in Calgary, Alberta June 9–11? Trinity Power Rentals was at Stampede Park for the fifth year in a row, among 2,000+ other exhibitors and more than 50,000 attendees. This year, two of our Outside Sales representatives, Darryl MacPherson and Kurt Guess, represented Trinity Power at our GPS exhibitor booth. (If you missed it, we posted an article about how to maximize your ROI from the 2015 Global Petroleum Show back in April.)

With the theme “Reimagine, Reinvent, Reposition,” the GPS 2015 organizers dmg :: events were clearly aware that the oil and gas industry faces some major changes in the near future, and had positioned the premier industry event to remain at the forefront of meeting that challenge—with environmental and fiscal solutions that make business sense for the current economic climate. Global News reported that amid dropping oil prices and industry uncertainty (caused in part by the push at the latest G7 Summit to phase out fossil fuels by the end of the 21st century), dmg :: events executive vice-president and GPS spokesperson Wes Scott was happy to disclose that attendance for the 2015 GPS looked “on par” with 2014 attendance numbers and that they were seeing a renewed interest in companies “getting back to business”—though the overall state of the industry would certainly cause “a lot of conversation.”

The Calgary Sun reported that although a few companies had reduced their exhibitor space requirements or cancelled attendance, this was offset by an increase in first time exhibitors and US attendees.

Our GPS 2015 booth staffer, Darryl MacPherson, would agree: “Some of the larger companies weren’t at the show this year, maybe due to budgetary restraints; the traffic was a little bit slower, but overall we had the same number of quality conversations with potential rental partners.”

The Calgary Sun article also identified a strong international presence (around 100 countries attend GPS each year), particularly from the US, China, Mexico and Kuwait; and strong exhibitor opportunities and client interest in environmental sustainability, especially air, water quality and ground remediation products or services.

What about opportunities for electrical contractors, either as attendees or exhibitors? There’s value in both: “Electrical contractors have the prime opportunity to meet key decision makers for future projects and partnerships, all in one location,” says MacPherson.

Meanwhile, the Calgary Herald highlighted the organizers’ preparedness for the shifting industry and economic climate. The Global Energy Career Expo runs concurrent to the GPS, and according to dmg :: events vice-president of energy, Bruce Carew, organizers had reformatted the Career Expo to focus on development and training rather than recruitment—with the introduction of a Career Development Zone where candidates gained insights from industry experts, alongside recruiter introductions and company presentations.

That’s the big picture. What was the best part about the view, up close and personal, from the booth floor? Our other GPS 2015 booth staffer, Kurt Guess, sums it up: “Getting a chance to represent Trinity face-to-face with customers who otherwise might not have had a chance to get to know who we are, and what we do. Asking people what their experience was with temporary power, and showing them how our solution may be a benefit—because we can maneuver quickly and offer full turnkey services, with generators and distribution, for any project.”

Photos from the GPS trade show in Calgary... over 2000 exhibitors and 50,000+ attendees from all over the world. A big thank you goes out to Darryl and Kurt for representing our company.
